The curriculum is drawn from the Early Years foundation Stage which came into statutory force in September 2008. It is designed for use by children between 0 and 5 years.
We recognise that all children have unique skills and achieve
differently and that it is inappropriate to make provision for them in a uniform way. Our curriculum therefore concentrates on providing the fullest range of learning opportunities in order to meet each child’s learning needs. In the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum,
children learn about:
• Personal, emotional and social development
• Communication, language and literacy
• Physical Development
• Problem solving, reasoning and numeracy
• Creative development
• Knowledge and understanding of the world
Children work through a series of development steps towards the early learning goals which most children will reach by the end of the
Reception Year.
Four key themes underpin and provide the focus for all of our work:
• The Unique Child
• Positive Relationships
• Enabling Environments
• Learning and Development
Eastwood Nursery is a place where the rights of children are
respected. We work to help everyone know what this means, to increase understanding of common experiences across cultures and develop independence. Eastwood is a place where the voice of the child is listened to.
Our work is based on the five key areas of children and young
peoples development:
• Being healthy
Enjoying the best physical and mental health possible, receiving the
best support in order to be able to do this, and laying the
foundations for living a healthy lifestyle.
• Staying safe
Being protected from harm and neglect and beginning to recognise
possible danger situations and how to avoid these.
• Enjoying and acheiving
Getting the most out of life and the joy of learning through play and
other activities and devloping appropriate skills that will carry on
into childhood, adolescence and adulthood.
• Making a positive contribution
Understanding right and wrong and forming positive relationships
with others, so that in the future children can be involved with the
community, behave responsibly, have succesful relationships and
choose to avoid criminal and/or anti-social behaviour.
• Developing Skills for the Future
Not allowing financial disadvantage to prevent children and young
people achieving their best
Observations and assessment of childrens learning, needs and
interests are carried out across six areas of learning, These are:
PSED:
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
CLL:
Communication, language and Literacy
PD:
Physical Development
CD:
Creative Development
P, S, R & N:
Problem Solving, Reasoning & Numeracy
K & U:
Knowledge & Understanding of the world
Every few months the staff will produce a plan of an area of interest to be explored in nursery together with suggestions for how you can be involved in supporting at home. This feeling of continuity
between home and school is very effective in the learning and
teaching process.
Once your child has been in school for 6 weeks we will share with you how they are settling. We hope you will share with us the things you know about your child’s development and learning.
The wide range of activities available for your child at Eastwood will be organised so as to provide balanced learning opportunities which are responsive to your child’s needs and interests.
Your child will be helped to develop independent learning and
thinking skills and also to benefit from the direct instruction of the staff.
Please ask to see your child’s book ‘My Learning Journey’ which will help you see the progress your child is making. You and your child will be invited to add your comments to the book about your child’s learning.
